SEPA Bunded Oil Tank Regulations in Scotland
Under the Water Environment (Controlled Activities) (Scotland) Regulations, domestic oil storage tanks in Scotland must be integrally bunded (a tank-within-a-tank capable of holding 110% of the inner tank capacity) if the tank is located near watercourses, drains, or boreholes.
Our OFTEC certified engineers supply and commission SEPA-compliant, UV-stabilised bunded tanks complete with wireless Watchman digital level gauges and non-drip fill points.
Prevents catastrophic oil spills into Scottish watercourses with zero environmental liability.

Why Every OBC Oil Installation Includes a Tigerloop De-Aerator
Traditional oil delivery systems required either a dangerous two-pipe underground loop (with high risk of concealed leaks) or a single pipe prone to airlocks and burner lockout.
We install an automatic Tigerloop de-aerator with built-in micro-oil filtration. It automatically vents trapped air and gas bubbles from the kerosene before it reaches the burner nozzle, guaranteeing clean combustion and eliminating sudden lockouts in freezing Scottish weather.
Tigerloop Advantages:
- Zero airlocks: Trapped air is automatically separated and vented continuously.
- Pre-heats fuel: Re-circulated warm fuel improves oil atomisation at the nozzle.
- Cleaner combustion: Protects the oil pump gears and photocell from debris.
OFTEC Oil Boiler Servicing Protocol
Oil boilers require thorough annual maintenance to maintain 94% condensing efficiency and prevent soot buildup.
Nozzle Replacement
Brand new Danfoss atomising oil nozzle fitted and torqued to exact manufacturer spray angle specifications.
Baffle & Sump Clean
Secondary condensing baffles removed, vacuumed, and chemical descaled to restore heat exchange rates.
Photocell & Electrodes
Flame sensor photocell wiped clean and spark ignition electrodes adjusted to exact spark gap clearances.
Electronic Flue Analysis
Digital printout of CO, CO2, smoke spot number, and net combustion efficiency provided for warranty validation.
Oil Boilers: West Scotland FAQs
Essential guidance for homeowners heating with domestic kerosene.
Yes. Both the Grant Vortex and Worcester Greenstar Heatslave models we install are manufactured to be HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) ready. When biofuel supplies become widely available in Scotland, a simple burner nozzle and pressure adjustment allows you to cut carbon emissions by up to 88% using the same boiler.
Traditional Scottish stone houses and cottages have thick solid walls that leak heat rapidly. Oil boilers supply high water temperatures (70°C–75°C) to heat standard radiators quickly. Heat pumps operate at lower temperatures (35°C–45°C), which often requires expensive wall insulation and replacing every radiator in the house with oversized double or triple-panel units.
Under Scottish building standards and OFTEC guidelines (BS 5410), an oil storage tank must be located at least 760mm from a non-fire rated boundary (e.g. wooden fence) and 1.8 metres away from non-fire rated building openings such as windows or eaves, unless a 30-minute fire barrier is installed.
Yes. Our complete package can include the safe pump-out of remaining kerosene, decontamination, and compliant SEPA disposal of your old single-skinned steel or plastic oil tank, followed by pouring a reinforced concrete base for your new bunded tank.
